Question:

Hello, all you creative people!I found an old window and attached frame molding on it to create a glass coffee table with 3 inch around the top to frame out the window. I am looking for creative ideas for “legs”. I didn’t want to put on traditional legs but want to place something/s under the window to make it a focal point. I am not stuck  in a certain design theme as I have a variety of places to put it. So all ideas would be appreciated. I can also add  extra embellishments at top since it is in it’s base state. Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:

I’ve got some ideas for you:

1. I made a coffee table from a window and a vanity bench. I turned the bench upside down and got a piece of plexiglass the size of the window so I could put “things” in the window openings. You can see pictures here:
http://www.frugalbydesign.com/blog/2006/04/17/window-to-a- coffee-table/

2. You could lay the window on top of a “container” filled with anything you love. Containers could be a barrel, bucket, terracotta pot, glass bowl, umbrella stand, basket - you get the idea.

3. You could stack books at the four corners for your legs.

Hope that helps.

Mantle-less fireplace

September 28th, 2007

I have a mantle-less fireplace with 48″ x 48″ area above the fireplace that our TV sits in. Any ideas? Theres about 18″ between the top of tile that lines the fireplace box and the space the tv sits in. Could I add a mantle and just put small stuff on it or would that look to busy with a 32″ tv above that? I need your help. Thanks.

My answer:

Did you find any of the ideas here helpful?:

Small basement windows that I don’t really need the light from

September 28th, 2007

Full question:

I have two small (approx 1 foot by 1 1/2 foot) recessed windows in my basement. I’m not sure what is the best way to cover them. The basement also has a glass door and two larger (regular size) windows, so there are other sources of natural light. Can you suggest the best way to cover these small windows? I thought of getting blinds to match the ones on the glass doors and the larger window, but they can be expensive. Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

My answer:

You may like the new paper window treatments that you can make yourself - they would be easy, effective, inexpensive, and REALLY unique. You can read instructions here:

Small basement windows that I need the light from

Full Question:

I am struggling with ideas for my small basement windows. They are located on the back wall behind the basement bar we built. I really need the light from them, but would like some type of treament. The look of the basement is industrial, retro– lots of greys and stainless. Any ideas?

My answer:

Your setup is ABSOLUTELY perfect for the peel and stick window coverings that are out. These are a film that can cover as much of the window as you’d like, but they still allow great light through. They look great - adding interest to the window - yet they don’t add any heaviness to the window. With small windows, that is important. I bought mine through Carol Wright’s catalog.

Lightening up a purple wall.

Full Question:

I painted my hall purple and want to lighten it up a bit. Is there any way I can do that? Maybe sponge white over it? Please help. Thanks.

Jess

My Answer:

You’re in luck! There are a LOT of options for you here. You can do the following with any color paint you want - white would work, a lighter purple, or even a contrasting or complimentary color would all work. White would definitely lighten the wall up, though.

1. Use a feather duster dipped in paint and lightly dab it all over the wall.

2. Make a ball out of rags, dip it lightly in paint, and dab it on the wall.

3. Use crinkled up paper the same way as above.

4. A sponge lightly dipped in paint works the same way.

5. As does any kind of stamp - large scrapbooking stamps work really well.

Enjoy and tell me how you make out!

Any ideas on what to do with a long hallway?

September 27th, 2007

Full Question:

I have a long hallway upstairs - the shorter side is the one with an electrical outlet, but the other is the longest - any ideas? Right now there is nothing on walls.

Thanks

Marilee

My answer:

Wow, you are very fortunate to have that much empty wall space - what a great “canvas” to work with! I have a few suggestions for you:

1. A “family” wall is really cool - photos of your family (even your furry family)mounted in matching frames looks like a gallery.

2. Do you collect anything? I collect ceiling globes and am mounting a collection on a wall I have here. I have seen a wall done in Indian dream-catchers - stunning!

3. You can create a great look by just using paint. Paint the wall one color and then accent it by ragging, dabbing, sponging, or washing on another color.

4. You could also cover the wall in any number of different “papers” - not just wallpaper - but brown bags, tissue paper, scrap-booking paper, gift wrap, post cards, sheet music, book pages, newsprint - the list of “papers” can be endless!

5. Add molding for drama. Put up a chair rail, or add molding “frames” or use wide molding for a small shelf. Gorgeous!

Enjoy whatever you decide to do with that wall - hope these ideas get your creative juices flowing!

Should I put Photos on two hallway walls?

September 27th, 2007

Full Question:

Hi, I have one more question about my long hallway upstairs. Do you think it would be too cluttered to have pictures on both sides? Thank you much.

My answer:

That depends on the width of the hallway. If the hallway is wide enough that TWO people can stop and gaze at photos - each one looking at a different wall - and a third person can get down the hall, then both sides would be great. If not, then only on one side.

I need help with an African-Style livingroom.

September 27th, 2007

Full Question:

I just bought a merlot color, but looks almost dark brown leather couch and recliner. I am so disappointed because it doesn’t look as nice as the uncomfortable couch I had before. My coffee table has a stone grey/pink top design with fairly thick wrought iron legs. I have African American art on the walls and African mask going up my fireplace. I have a throws from Nigeria that I’ve put on the sofa and the chair but room still looks drab. I believe I need an area rug but am allergic to wool and the table is very heavy and would possibly rip the African woven rugs that I’ve seen in magazines. I have a bay window where I have two large plants and the couch is in front of the plants.

For some reason this is just not working for me. My living room has lot it’s WOW that’s nice factor.

Almost forgot, my living room has an open plan with few walls and high ceilings. In the dining area which connects to the living room has a glass table with bamboo back and wrought iron legs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My Answer:

Your timing is perfect! I have just completed an “African-Style” decorating article. I hope you find some of these ideas usful:

This is probably one of the least discussed decorating styles there is. I have only done this style once. Here are things I did:

* I used scarves over lampshades - these were animal themes.

* Tall artificial plants were plentiful - hiding stuff like TV antennas.

* I got a woven shawl off E-bay that became wall art.

* I got another one that become a furniture throw.

* Drums were used as side tables. Other ones were used as the legs of a coffee table.

* Mosquito netting, hung from the ceiling on cup hooks, was draped over the two sides and back of a comfy chair.

* Naturals like raffia, stones and branches could be used for lots and lots of things - tie raffia around the base of lamps, use stones to make free standing art, and stand branches in a wicker umbrella stand.

* A great fabric of choice for this theme is muslin. Curtains, pillows, furniture covers (it’s not the greatest for the last one because it wrinkles).

* I found a really cool rainstick for this room - it sounds just like rain in the rain forest

Question about Laying hardwood floors

September 27th, 2007

Email the link for this site to a friend!

Full Question:

I am going to lay plank hardwood in my hallway which is 44.8 ft. in length and 6 ft. 5 in. in width. My question is should I lay the wood diagonal or straight since I have three rooms which open off of the long hallway, all of which have no doors, just wide openings (formal dining room, library, and living room). Also, in the rooms which open off the hallway I am laying the same wood in those rooms as well as the kitchen and nook, which are at the end of the hallway. Should I lay all the would diagonally or should I change directions in the different rooms?

My answer:

This is one of those “preference” things - whatever you prefer. You can lay the planks in the hallway at a diagonal and end them right at the doorways to the rooms off the hall and start a NEW direction in those rooms, if you want. Laying it all in one direction would have a very “uniform” look, if you like “uniform”. There is no wrong or right here - it’s what you “prefer”.
