Full question:

Hi ! We just purchased a home built in 1961. The house has mostly been completely redone by previous owners, with the exception of the bathroom. The bathroom has a tile shower and bathtub in mint green (the shower walls have two large white diamond shapes as part of the tile), the sink is mint green and the vanity counter is pink marble. The shower also has doors, which I absolutely hate because the tracks are such a pain to keep clean. We looked into BathFitters, but they are way too much money. Any ideas for how to update this bathroom? Thanks!

My answer:

Boy, I would LOVE the colors you are working with - that’s what makes decorating so much fun! We all like different things. Anyhoo, you can buy Do-It-Yourself resurfacing kits at Lowes to redo the bathtub and the sink. I understand they are easy to use as long as you take your time. I have not done this myself, though.

One of my friends has successfully used wallpaper cutouts on her bathroom tile to cover colors she didn’t like. Although there are “wallies” out there, they aren’t as frugal as buying a roll or two of border paper and cutting out the shape/pattern/design you like, wetting them and putting them on the tiles. Maybe get a solid colored wallpaper (black to go with your white diamonds) cut them to the shape of the tiles you want to hide and stick em up. I don’t know what style you want to change it to, so these are just suggestions).

As far as the vanity top goes, there has been a lengthy discussion on this board about painting them - you could find it in the archives (it’s from back near the beginning of this board ). Maybe that would help you.

I understand the shower door dilemma. I took mine off because I got tired of cleaning it. In its place I put up a victorian lace shower curtain with a colored liner.

If you decide to keep the colors and work WITH them, they are a great cottage color combination. I am using it on my porch right now. You may want to look at some of my photos in the photo section of this board to see them in modern day action. I wish you could just pack them up and send them to me - I’d swap you for my more modern stuff any day of the week!
