Also, I also need directions for painting an entertainment center that has a sliding door. It’s an inexpensive piece of furniture made of MDF (can we say cardboard?
) that I bought years ago when I was setting up in my first home. I don’t want to throw it out, and I thought that it might look more suitable today if I painted it. It’s a dark wood color — fake pine. I have an extra bedroom in my home that I would like to call a “serenity room”.
This room would primarily contain my sewing machine and craft materials; however, there is also an exercise machine and Queen Anne chair. I had the room painted a goldenrod color when I moved in a year ago. I was thinking of handpainting designs on the wall. There is already a long table and chairs set up in the room — which was once upon a time a kitchen table in my first home. It is a country-style set — a rectangular table (no leaf) made of dark wood with a laminate type top. I also have two end tables and a dresser left over from a spare bedroom suite.
Help!
I’m not sure where to start. I want to organize this room without spending a fortune on craft organizers or wall units.

Look in your library and see if you find any of these. You probably have a book source to buy if interested, but if not, try here:
I recently saw some bookcases that fit your description, composition- wise ( I laughed about that cardboard comment of yours!) that were painted and “fixed up” and they looked GREAT! They were painted a dark sage green and then crackled over with a light sage green. Then some wood embellishments were painted to match and then put on top of the cases. A similar look can be seen here:
The paint job and the embellishments changed everything.
If you decide to paint like I described above, do all the pieces the same. If any of the drawers in the dresser have seen better days, take them out and lay wood on the slates that held the drawers up. You’ve now got a shelf to put baskets, buckets, tins, or boxes on for storage.
You can also put matching crates, baskets, boxes, or tins under your “work” table.
Not sure what style to end tables are but they may be modified for more storage if they have drawers or doors on them.
