Creating storage in a small bathroom.

Full question:
I just bought a condo, and am in the process of getting settled in. I have a severe shortage of closet space here, and was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for how to create storage in the bathroom. I was thinking of mounting some sort of cabinet with doors on the wall above the toilet to hold extra towels, but they all seem so expensive, or they’re really cheap looking.
I was thinking that maybe a really small bookcase or something might be able to be mounted, but then it wouldn’t have doors to hide the towels, and I’m not sure that it would be deep enough.
It needs to be easy to create by myself, inexpensive, and with doors or other covering to hide my clean towels and washcloths (none of which match, so that’s why I want to hide them). Most bookcases are only 9″ deep, and I’m thinking 12″ would probably be better.
Any suggestions for something I haven’t thought of?
Thanks.
My answer:
Congrats on your new condo! Enjoy making it all your very own. Now about your storage.
My first concern about over the toilet is that you hit your head on something if it’s too deep. My over-the-toilet cabinet is only 8 inches deep. I still can fit a whole lot in it though, especially if I jelly-roll the towels and washclothes. SO I wouldn’t discount that location. And if you do end up getting a bookcase, you can use a tension rod hung on the inside upper edges of the bookcase to hang some kind of a curtain there. I also saw someone use a roller shade in that same fashion.
Here are some other thoughts:
* I had a wooden canister set that I was not using. I painted all the tops to match my bathroom, and then hung them on the wall behind the bathroom door. I use the canister handles to hang towels from there.
* I also hung an over-the-door rack on the back of that door and hung more towels there.
I know you said your towels didn’t match but even if not, they would not be seen until the door was shut. And then not too many people are looking at whether the towels match or not.
* I have a pedestal bowl on my bathroom counter with rolled washclothes in it.
* I have an umbrella stand in the corner between the tub and toilet that holds extra rolls of toilet paper.
* I have a lidded box sitting on small round plant stand with shampoo, conditioner and soap samples in at the other corner formed by the tub and the wall.
* Do you have under-the-sink storage? Some can easily be made in most cases, if not.
* There are some storage options for inside your tub, if you have a tub. I have a wire basket that spans the width of my tub and it holds shampoo, conditioner, razors, scrubbies, nail brushes, bath beads, etc. I actually got that at the dollar store.
* I have a glass on the side of my sink that holds my toothbrush, toothpaste, and a couple razors.
Hopefully you have a medicine cabinet. That does help a lot.
