Full question:

I have a mantle-less fireplace that I am having a hard time decorating. Any ideas?

My answer:

Here are some thoughts about your mantleless fireplace. In general, I see three areas you can work with around the fireplace:

The wall above/around it

Inside it

On either side of the opening for it

So, here are some ideas:

For the wall:

Hanging a large “something” always works. My favorites are old signs, doors, gates, or fencing (I like the gates and fencing because you can then display your Christmas cards in them - during other seasons you can do postcards, sheet music, or any other paper collectible you like - or NOTHING if you want - it makes a statement no matter what you do with it) - but you may like art or photos. A framed poster is a frugal idea. I saw some GREAT art made by just framing pages sold for people into scrapbooking to go in scrapbooks. Those pages are 3 for a dollar at my dollar store here. I also saw a photo cut into four parts and each part framed in a separate frame, then hung on the wall reassembled.

For inside it:

Make a candlescape. Use clear glasses for candleholders along with candleholders and votive holders you already have - anything clear. Raise them up to varying levels by using what I call “lifts and levels”. Depending on what look you like, those can be tins, wooden boxes, or other glass pieces - anything you can set the candleholders on so they are at various levels. I saw one done this week, where someone had taken costume jewely necklaces and drapped them in and out of their arrangement. Add some glass balls and light the candles. The jewelry, balls and glass will reflect lots of light. If you want even more, stand a mirror at the back of the fireplace before you do the candlescape.

On either side of the opening for it:

Get a couple of urns you like and put a matching plant in each one and stand them on either side of the fireplace. Or do what I want to do. Stand two tomato cages upside down and tie each one’s tines togther. Cut the tins with wire cutters if necessary to make the cage look like a naked pine tree. Then completely cover those frames with clear mini lights. Once done, stand them each in an urn and put them on either side of the fireplace. Geez, now I want to go make me some!
