Doesn’t painted paneling look like painted paneling?

Full question:
I’m watching this conversation with interest as we have paneling in a house we purchased a few months ago and though we have thought of painting it I have this tremendous fear it will just look like painted paneling. Also, there’s just so *much* of it, I think we’d be painting for ever as the whole downstairs is covered in it.
My answer:
I painted paneling in my last house. The only clue that it was paneling were the long straight grooves that paneling has. I painted mine an off white and the lines were “there” but didn’t detract from the look of the room at all.
I put shutters on the sides of the window in that room and hung branches from the ceiling. The room was done in a “gardening” theme. It was a room I loved in the winter when there were no gardens - only snow.
If you feel ambitious, you canĀ fill the grooves with drywall mudd or wood filling, then slightly sand the area until smooth.
I’d recommend a primer before you paint it if you take this route. You can also wallpaper over the paneling once you’ve smoothed it out.
