Full question:
Store-bought stocking holders have never worked for me. My stockings are always too heavy when they are stuffed. I’d love to hear if anyone has an idea like this that will actually hold a stuffed stocking.
My answer:
I have several of these. The ones that give me the most grief with stuffed stockings are the ones that sit right on the edge of the shelf with very little surface area actually in contact with the mantel edge. For those, I have found that what I call “ticky tack” works great to help hold those in place.
Ticky tack is really sold as the stuff you put posters up with that makes no holes in the wall and also leaves no marks when it’s removed. I use it to make plates on the wall straight when using plate holders, and to straight pictures hung on nails when the pictures don’t quite hang straight.
Back to the stocking holders. I got a great pair of cast iron cabin-shaped holders with a longer distance from the cabin part to the place where the stockings get hung. That means I can push them back further on the mantel, making stuffed stockings no problem at all.
