Full question:
Have you auctioned off anything on Ebay? I am looking to do this and would like some advice on how to go about it.
My answer:
I have auctioned stuff off and am considering my own site there, but do not have one yet. Here’s what I can share about my experience:
1. Take GOOD pictures of whatever you are offering even if you think the item should be self explanatory.
2. Do some searches on COMPLETED AUCTIONS before listing things to see if it is worth it in fees to list the item. You can see what things have sold for and what things haven’t sold.
3. Write GOOD and ACCURATE descriptions of your items (especially if the item has flaws. “Flaws” do not mean the item won’t sell). “Good” descriptions include keywords that people are likely to use to search for whatever you are selling.
4. PLEASE post the cost of shipping or a way to calculate it by zip code. If I have to “ask the seller for shipping costs” I will avoid that seller.
5. Post feedback if you want people to post it for you.
6. Ship items immediately upon payment and package them properly. This was my LEAST FAVORITE part of doing auctions – the packaging and shipping but it has to be done, and be done right. One of the most common reasons buyers post negative feedback is poor packaging.
7. Take credit cards. Sales will be better if you do. Offering the through Paypal is the most common way to do that. Be prepared for people to tell you that they hate Paypal, because some do. I don’t, but some do.
This will get you started.
