Full question:
I am looking for inexpensive counter covers for my kitchen. Any ideas?
My answer:
I got a new decorating book today (750 Great Ideas for Decorating on a Budget by Better Homes and Gardens)and idea #15 reads:
Cover a hopelessly degraded work surface with water and stain resistant oilcloth in a colorful pattern.

Now, I had heard of “oilcloth” and I’m sure I’m old enough to know what it is, but I didn’t. So I looked it up online at http://www.m- w.com. They say it’s:
cloth treated with oil or paint and used for table and shelf coverings
So I did a little more digging and this stuff is used for a TON of things, like:
table covers, shelf covers, waste basket covers, drawer liners, sandbox canopies, clothes basket liners, rug anchors, picnic table covers, archery target covers, shoe bags, laundry bags, canister set covers, book covers, school bags, pencil holders, desk protectors, work aprons, scrapbook covers, stuffed toys, playpen pads, baby bibs, doorway decorations, lamppost decorations, pup tents, chair cushions, appliance covers, even BOWLS!
So, it may actually work as an economical counter cover. It looks like it sells for about $7.00 a yard online - I’m guessing it may be even less locally on sale.
