Full question:

I found a wicker birdcage while cleaning up my garage. Can I paint wicker? What can I do with this?

My answer:

Yes, you can both paint and dye wicker. Spray paint is easiest for painting. Bigger pieces can be dyed in your bathtub.

A bird cage can be used for a planter or made into a lamp. As a planter, just put a plant - live or silk, inside the cage. Hang or sit wherever you want.

You can turn that birdcage into a lamp by:

1. Removing the bottom with wire cutters or a small saw.

2. Line the inside with tissue paper applied with wallpaper paste. Brush the paste on the wicker inside the cage then press the tissue paper to it.

3. You can then add light by either covering a small table lamp with the cage, or by adding a pendant light fitting at the top of the cage and hanging it up.

I’d use a low watt bulb with this.

And you can also trim out the outside of the cage with buttons, shells or any other small embellishment that suits your decor.

You can also turn that bird cage into a card holder or mail holder, either for a wedding or with embellishments that match your decor for a home decor piece.

If for a wedding, trim with while flowrs, lace and pearls, and ribbons. Remove or open the door and put all wedding cards inside while at the reception.

For a letter holder, trim as desired and slide letters or envelopes between the slats of the wicker.
