Full question:
I have a family room in the front of my country 2 story home, it is 17 1/2 by 11. I need decorating ideas. We have moved our leather furniture to the basement family room and have a formal family room also. I’m not really interested in purchasing another sofa set but would like to have a “Sitting room” or “TV room” for my husband and I to enjoy when it’s just us here. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Trying to think of a theme for it????? Help!
My answer:
I’ll throw some themes into the ring that would work in a “country” house:
1. Do you like to garden, or just plain like flowers? A garden theme using garden accessories, like fencing, watering cans, terra cotta pots, birdhouses and a wooden wheelbarrow would fit that theme.
2. Are there any animals you like? You could do a theme around that - birds and butterflies would be an easy theme, as would cats, dogs, or safari animals.
3. Is vintage your thing? That’s another easy one using vintage linens in interesting ways - curtains, pillows, and table cloths are simple to make using hankies, aprons, and other linens. You could also use a lot of vintage finds like mirrors, aluminum ware, and/or milk glass.
4. How about a library? I turned two of my bedrooms into librarys, making all sorts of decorative accents using books.
5. Do you like to travel, or wish you could? There is SO MUCH you could do with maps as a decorating tool.
6. Do you collect anything? Those collections can be the basis of a great room theme.
7. Is there a COLOR you really like? A room done in various tone on tones of that color can be quite striking!
8. Do you want the room to do double duty (be a home office AND a TV room, or a guest room AND a sitting room, etc.)? If so, tell us what you dream of.
Tell us what you like! The ideas will indeed flow once you do…
