Full question:

Do you have any clever ideas for Valentine Card Mailboxes? In the past we have used a shoebox and covered it with colorful paper, foil Valentine cards, foam cut-outs, etc. I’m looking for some different ideas. I need a good one so my 8 yr old son gets excited about this. He has to do one for class and he’s just not interested in it at this moment.

My answer:

As I was reading your post, my first thought was “use a REAL mailbox”! Then I got to the 8-year old son part, and said, maybe not.

So, I suggest you go with things that 8-year olds like - and they LIKE guy things and NON-frilly things - and DIFFERENT things. So here are my suggestions:

* Use a shoe - one of his sneakers or something like that. Let him use fabric paints (if you’re brave and he’ll still wear them after) or use shoes that weren’t ever going to be worn anyway. I’m guessing that no one will have a show for their Valentines, and that will be a good thing.

* Use something “sports” related - a basketball or soccer ball cut in half maybe. Even a baseball or football helmet

* Use a video game box - either the ones the games come in or one of the storage boxes

* Does he have a hobby that he really likes? Can you come up with a “mailbox” using something from that?

* My sig other tells me that he was “stuck” in this exact situation at 8-years old, and used his metal batman lunchbox. Now, I’m not sure if kids are “in to” metal lunchboxes of ANY kind, but the idea is to work with a THEME HE LIKES.

Because, hearts and lace and flowers and kisses probably ain’t it. :)
