Full question:

I have two small (approx 1 foot by 1 1/2 foot) recessed windows in my basement. I’m not sure what is the best way to cover them. The basement also has a glass door and two larger (regular size) windows, so there are other sources of natural light. Can you suggest the best way to cover these small windows? I thought of getting blinds to match the ones on the glass doors and the larger window, but they can be expensive. Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

My answer:

You may like the new paper window treatments that you can make yourself – they would be easy, effective, inexpensive, and REALLY unique. You could:

* Weave paper strips together to make the correct-sized window cover.

* Use wallpaper as a shade – some that matches or compliments your room.

* Use paper that you have designed yourself – with stencils, paintings or other embellishments.
