Full question:
We just finished off our basement. My question is, how do I make the room lighter and is there something I can put on the walls to make it look like there are windows? I have a love seat and a couch with a denim slipcover on it. I also have some 3 to 5 feet pine trees to decorate with if I want. I thought about doing a cabin theme . . .
My answer:
I did my basement in a cabin theme last year - but didn’t make it lighter - I wallpapered the walls with “log” wallpaper about 2/3 the way down and “stone” wall paper the rest of the way. I used decoys, leather-covered bottles, pine boughs and pine cones as the accessories. It’s our “game room” so there is a pool table, dart board and board game table in there, along with music and movies.
I can help with a window idea, though. How about hanging old windows on the wall and adding a shutter on each side. You can replace the glass in a window with mirrors for one, add a outdoor scene to the wall that you see when looking “out” the window (either by painting it on, wallpapering in on, or decopauging it on) in another, and hanging maybe fishing tackle inside the window panes of another.
If you used the mirror idea and then make sure a lamp in the room reflects off the mirrors, that would give more light.
