Full question:
In the last year my son has taken over the guest bathroom as his own. I have noticed that there are some very strange yellowy type stains on the walls. They aren’t really stains, but more like something ON the walls over the paint. I can rub them off with my finger and have washed on wall down with vinegar. They come right off. The room is painted in flat white paint. I was planning on painting the room and trim this summer but I might do this sooner. Can you tell me what these weird stain things are? They actually feel like soap. Could it be the body wash he uses? I don’t want to wash/paint and have them all come back.
My answer:
The last time I saw something like this, it was caused by condensation. Is there a fan in that bathroom? If so, is it on when water is in heavy use in there (bathing or showering)? If you have a fan and it’s not being used, try using it and see if this stops. If you don’t have a fan, that’s probably what’s causing this.
The water that condenses on the walls, is making droplets containing all sorts of stuff from the air and from on the walls. I don’t think it’s the body wash directly, although any small droplets of it in the water vapor will condense along with everything else.
