Full question:

I’ve never posted before, but just love reading all of the ideas!

Our oldest son moved out and we are now able to have a guest room. We are planning to do it in reds and blacks.

We purchased tabletop pyramid lamps at Pier One and they are our inspiration pieces.

We already have a Papasan chair, and got a black cushion for it. We plan to get an Ikea sofa bed with a red cover. I got red curtains at Pier One, and some other accessories. Everything at Pier One was on sale and I had a gift card with an additional 15% off! I love a bargain!

As for the walls, my husband stripped the wallpaper yesterday and now we are thinking of paint ideas. We thought the wall for the sofa bed, which is in sort of an alcove, we could paint black, then put red over it and comb through the paint. Or, do red and then colorwash black over it. The other walls we were unsure if we should do red or an accent color, and we have no idea what colors would look good with the red and black. And then there’s the ceiling…

We have pine hardwood floors and trim. Should we leave the trim honey-colored or paint it black?

The room is approximately 11 x 11. We would love some ideas from all of you creative people out there! Any wall, trim, accessories, accent colors, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a bunch in advance! And Happy New Year!

Ellen :)

My answer:

My first thought on this was “gold” as in “metallic gold”. After going to Pier One’s site to look at your lamps, I see that they too have paired them up with metallic gold. That would be my personal choice with red and black.

As far as the trim goes, if you do go with gold, the honey MIGHT work. Depends on the “goldness” of the honey. Whatever you paint it (if you do) consider painting it the lightest color you can. You’ll thank yourself should you ever want to paint the room some other color. Covering black is tough, although black looks GREAT as a trim color.

For the ceiling, you may like stapling something to it - something that would change the color/texture/look, but would not be permanent. I have seen fabric used, woven mats used (spray painted prior to installing - VERY easy way to paint compared to painting a ceiling!) and lattice used. I’m sure there are other things that would work really well.

Since you have the luxury of this room now, think about if you’d like it to serve double duty. Since most people don’t have guests constantly, that is a common choice. Do you want this room to double as an office, a library, a sewing/craft/hobby room, a home theatre, a game room? If there is a special “room” you’d also like it to be, that will help direct you toward accents and accessories.
